Quality Enhancement Plan: Learning Assistant Program
Resources
Learning Assistants (LAs) are provided with a comprehensive Google Drive folder each semester which holds the relevant training documents, contact information, best practices and all other needed information for LAs.
For those LAs who are responsible for official correction guidance and approval, there will also be a document within the Google Drive folder with directions and documentation files.
An LA program Canvas course is also available for leaders, faculty and staff.

Learning Assistants (LAs) are guided by three essential elements of the LA model: Practice, Preparation, and Pedagogy. Each of these elements work in concert to deliver a successful LA experience for faculty and students.
LAs typically work between 6-10 hours each week. Each course is uniquely redesigned to enhance the quality of learning, so an LAs hours may look quite different from one course to another. However, the essential three elements are always present and powerful!

Being a Learning Assistant is a wonderful experience for undergraduate students at Florida Atlantic.
In addition to having been successful in their coursework, an LA is expected to bring together professionalism with peer-assisted learning. To do this, LAs must continue to develop their skills. All LAs will engage in trainings, including attending a pedagogy seminar course during the first semester as an LA. Faculty help continue the training and guidance through weekly preparation meetings that typically last from 1-1.5 hours, depending on the class and subject.
LAs are expected to:
路 Attend the semester kick-off training and team meetings.
路 Attend each lecture, every week, for the semester.
路 Prepare individually for class and review the specific content (1-hour a week).
路 Participate in planning meetings (1-1.5 hours a week) with the lead professor and other LAs.
路 Complete the semester-long pedagogy seminar within the first semester of employment.
路 Maintain a balance between being a peer and being a professional LA by modeling behaviors that can lead to academic success, such as: being on time for all classes and office hours, sending well written and timely emails and announcements, promoting a growth mindset, and sharing resources available on campus.
