Program Description
The externship training program provides supervised experience in an active university counseling center. Participation in a range of activities including individual, group, and couples counseling; therapeutic psychological assessment; consultation; crisis intervention; and outreach activities are included in the program. Supervision is geared to the graduate student's level of professional development. Our staff provides exposure to varied clinical perspectives and theoretical orientations. Extern trainees participate in a weekly Training Seminars, Case Conference and Focused Improvement Time. In addition, there are bi-weekly meetings with the Extern Coordinator, Consultative Supervision with Doctoral Interns, and (when possible) attendance at In-Service Trainings. All of the above formal training components will occur at the Boca Raton campus. Each trainee is required to be on the Boca Raton campus on Wednesday mornings. Externs may also complete hours at Davie or Jupiter sites depending on avalaibility.听
Philosophy and Principles
The following principles underlie the extern training at 糖心Vlog CAPS:
- The competent practice of psychology/counseling/social work entails the development of advanced skills in a broad range of generalist activities.
- In line with the expected accreditation standards of the American Psychological Association, Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs and Council on Social Work Education,听 externs will learn to integrate their client's individual and culturally diverse needs into their clinical work. This education includes extern's becoming awareness of their听 own vaules and impact of cultural on their vaules to not negatively impact their clinical work.听
- Psychological/counseling/social work practice is based on the science of psychology, counseling, social work, and other applicable academic fields.
- The emergence of a professional therapist is the culmination of a developmental process which begins prior to formal training and which extends beyond the completion of the extern training experience.
- Psychologists/counselors/social workers should exhibit a high degree of professional consideration in their actions.
These principles form the basis for the practice of psychology, counseling and social work by the staff of the agency and therefore the training philosophy maintains consistency with the mission, goals, and culture of the sponsor institution.
Trainee Requirements
Extern trainees come from different academic disciplines including Counseling and Clinical Psychology, Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Social Work. Currently, we have formal training relationships with 糖心Vlog鈥檚 Counselor Education program, 糖心Vlog's Social Work program and Nova Southeastern University鈥檚 doctoral program in clinical psychology. In the coming years, one of our primary goals is to expand our practicum program to other mental health training programs at 糖心Vlog, as well as create new relationships with other universities in neighboring communities.听听Our extern training program is only open to students of those programs and/or academic institutions for which we have a formal memorandum of understanding. This process is often involves contracts and can take time to build a new relationship.听
Extern trainees must be currently enrolled in an appropriate academic program leading to licensure and certification.听 We require that applicants have one year / two semesters of supervised counseling experience and have completed basic coursework in psychotherapy or counseling theory, as well as clinical diagnosis. If students meet the above mentioned criteria, they may complete an application and potentially participate in an in-person interview to determine goodness of fit at our site. Applications are to be submitted in early spring and graduate students will be notified of their interview status, based on program timeframe. Applicants are accepted pending background clearance. Trainees make a commitment of two semesters to one year at our site, usually committing to the Fall and Spring semesters of the upcoming academic year.听
Program Requirements
Each extern trainee has a 鈥淭raining Program Agreement鈥 which specifies time and activity requirements for their placement at 糖心Vlog CAPS. A commitment of two semesters is the minimum practicum trainee placement. A twelve month placement over three consecutive semesters is the maximum placement. All extern trainees commit to placements of 20 hours per week at CAPS. Ten hours of direct client contact are required. The trainee may engage in direct contact by providing an ongoing individual psychotherapy; observing, co-leading, or independently leading a workshop or classroom presentation, participating as a co-therapist in a group, and participating in outreach events. The trainee is expected to complete all required on-site hours regardless of whether appointments are filled or open. Any unfilled direct contact hours may be used for writing progress notes, assessments, and termination summaries, as well as reviewing recordings of sessions, reading clinically relevant material, researching and developing workshops/groups, and engaging in other professional development activities as required.听
