How do I plan for my Study Abroad experience?

The Honors College (HC), in partnership with the Florida Atlantic's Education Abroad staff, helps HC students add an overseas study abroad experience to their Florida Atlantic degree. Honors College students must complete at least four weeks abroad (total time spent abroad in the program) and earn at least 3 academic credits from Florida Atlantic or another approved, accredited institution in order to fulfill the non-classroom learning experience requirement. Students interested in studying abroad are strongly encouraged to begin planning a year to six months prior to the semester they wish to go abroad. Below are some helpful guidelines to help you get started on your path.

  • Survey the landscape of study abroad opportunities. Fill out the study abroad inquiry form, which will allow the Education Abroad staff to gather resources and information relevant to your particular interests and objectives. You will learn about options through Florida Atlantic, other universities and independent program providers.
  • Meet with your Study Abroad Advisor: Madison McShane, Assistant Director, Study Abroad, (561) 297-1080, the Jupiter campus representative from the Boca's Education Abroad, can assist you in planning and preparing to study abroad.
  • Receive pre-approval for your choice of coursework from your faculty advisor. This ensures that the courses will transfer and fulfill specific requirements of your curriculum as planned.
  • Decide on a program and apply. Once you have chosen your program, after consultation with both the Coordinator of Academic Programs and your faculty advisor, all students MUST complete the Study Abroad Application with the OIP prior to applying to your abroad program, including all supporting documentation and the applicable application fee.
  • Request your transcript from the institution abroad. The original transcript should be sent to:
    糖心Vlog
    Education Abroad
    Attention: Madison McShane
    777 Glades Road, GS 212Q
    Boca Raton, FL 33431

The Education Abroad staff will work with the Florida Atlantic Registrar鈥檚 Office to ensure that your credits and grades are appropriately posted on the Florida Atlantic transcript. A copy of the transcript will be forwarded to the Honors College for your file.

Additional Information for Flagler Scholars

Flagler Scholars are required to complete a study abroad experience before their senior year, and they should follow the specific guidelines for the Flagler Study Abroad Enrichment Program. For further questions regarding course registration, expense reimbursement, and other aspects related to specific requirements, contact David Flanigan, Director of Academic Support Services, HC 132, (561) 799-8622.

Core / Concentration Requirements

All coursework taken abroad must be pre-approved by the student鈥檚 faculty advisor in order to ensure that these courses fulfill Honors College core, concentration or other requirements.

Course Enrollment

All study abroad must be coordinated through Education Abroad. Students must complete a Study Abroad Application, including all supporting documentation and the application fee. Students enrolled in Florida Atlantic exchange and faculty-led programs are registered for the appropriate study abroad courses through the Education Abroad office. Students who choose study abroad programs offered through direct enrollment at other universities or program providers are responsible for requesting transcripts to be sent to the Education Abroad office upon completing their study abroad program. Students should be sure to get their program pre-approved by the Education Abroad office.

  • Dual-Enrollment. Dual enrollment refers to registration at two institutions鈥擣lorida Atlantic and the study abroad program鈥檚 sponsor institution. Students are responsible for paying tuition for courses at the HC and at the study abroad institution. Students must still check with their advisor beforehand to ensure that their coursework taken abroad will count towards their concentration or other degree requirements. Students who enroll in a study abroad program through another university need to ensure that the transcripts for coursework taken abroad are sent to Florida Atlantic and that there is documentation that these courses were taken abroad. After the transcript is received, the grades will be posted as credit for HC study abroad courses.
  • Enrollment through the study abroad program only. Courses taken abroad must still be pre-approved by the faculty advisor, but the student only enrolls at the study abroad institution. The Education Abroad staff validates that the study abroad program the student has chosen is accredited and will fulfill the non-classroom learning experience requirement at the Honors College. Students will not be enrolled in the HC while abroad and no HC courses will appear on the student鈥檚 schedule while studying abroad.

Eligibility for HC Scholarship and other Financial Aid

The Honors College Scholarship is given only to students enrolled full-time in HC courses during the fall and spring semesters. Students who study abroad in the fall or spring semesters or for an entire academic year and want to use their HC scholarship are required to dual-enroll in HC study abroad courses. Students who dual-enroll during fall and spring can use the HC scholarship to pay for their HC study abroad courses. Students who choose not to dual-enroll during the fall or spring semesters will not receive their HC scholarship.

Students may use Bright Futures and other sources of federal financial aid (such as loans) if they enroll in a study abroad program through another accredited institution in Florida. Students who enroll through study abroad programs outside of Florida cannot use Bright Futures, but may be eligible for other types of federal financial aid. These are general guidelines, and students are responsible for checking with the Office of Financial Aid regarding the use of financial aid for various study abroad programs.

Program Director

Dear student,

隆Bienvenido/a a nuestra p谩gina web! My name is Dr. Carmen Ca帽ete Quesada and I have taught Spanish language and literature at the Wilkes Honors College since the Fall 2009. Originally from Granada, a town located in the South of Spain, I came to the United States to pursue a Ph.D. in Spanish and Latin American literatures at the University of Florida and Vanderbilt University. I have always been interested in the cultural relations between Spain and the Americas, and I usually bring this trans-Atlantic dimension to the courses that I teach. For example, one of the key questions for SPW 3136 Pre-Columbian and Colonial Literature has to do with the tragic consequences of the European conquest of indigenous peoples in America, and how this initial encounter with the so-called New World transformed the Spanish Empire into a modern nation. In SPW 4492, The Newest Literature of the Caribbean, students learn about the cultural impact of the Cuban Revolution of 1959 on intellectuals from Spain and Latin America who experienced harsh dictatorships in their own countries. As I note in IDS 3932, The Spanish Civil War in Retrospect: Loss, Memory and the Past, the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) brought to the country a great deal of volunteers from the United States to support the Spanish Republican cause. Learning a popular language like Spanish in the U.S. will make you a more attractive candidate in a job interview, particularly in areas with a large Spanish-speaking population. The courses that we offer for the Spanish minor and major at the Wilkes Honors College will prepare you to create a transnational and global perspective regardless of your primary area of research. In fact, some students take advantage of this opportunity and complete a double major in Spanish and another concentration. This option is feasible for students who took AP courses in Spanish while in high school, or those with a Hispanic background who are easily able to communicate in Spanish. Participating in a study abroad program is the fastest and most effective way to acquire proficiency in a foreign language. Our Summer Program in Madrid combines formal instruction in one of the most prestigious local colleges, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, with guest speakers, visits to museums, tours, excursions, and other immersion activities that will increase students鈥 cultural awareness. After a few weeks completely immersed in the program, you will become more fluent in the target language and more appreciative of the history and the richness of the Hispanic world. Do not hesitate to contact me for any question related to the SAP in Madrid or the Spanish concentration at the Wilkes Honors College. 隆Espero conocerte pronto!聽

Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) is the largest and most prestigious university in Spain, and one of the oldest universities in Europe. Its origins date back to the Medieval times, when the Estudio de Escuelas Generales was founded in the town of Alcal谩 de Henares with the support of King Sancho IV of Castile in 1293. The university was transferred to the city of Madrid in 1836, and in 1970 it was renamed as Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Today, the Complutense has over 74,000 undergraduate students, 11,000 graduate students, and an annual enrollment of around 100,000 students. With 76 degree programs, this public university offers the widest range of degree courses in the country. Its official degrees are arranged with respect to four areas of knowledge: Humanities, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Health Sciences, and Social Sciences. The University Library contains over 2.2 million volumes, over 40,000 journal titles, and over 300 student computer terminals. Students enrolled in our 糖心Vlog Summer Abroad Program in Madrid will be taking courses in the main campus called Ciudad Universitaria, which is located in the Western urban district of Madrid known as Moncloa, and about 15 minutes away by Metro from the central shopping areas. Courses will be offered by the Centro Complutense para la Ense帽anza del Espa帽ol, located in the faculty of Philology and Letters, and classes will take place in Buildings D and E. Upon their arrival, students will receive a University Student Card which gives access to all facilities on campus, such as Wi-Fi service, pool areas, sport grounds, libraries and computer rooms. There is more information on Centro Complutense in the link below.
