Evolution & Marine Ecology in the Galapagos

placeholder-image

Program Description

This intensive field-based study abroad program examines evolutionary processes and marine ecological systems using the Galápagos Archipelago as a living laboratory. The course integrates evolutionary theory, marine ecology, and field research methods to explore the ecological pressures that shape adaptation, species interactions, and ecosystem structure in island environments. Students are based on Santa Cruz Island, participating in daily field excursions, snorkeling surveys, intertidal and mangrove studies, and natural history hikes. A 4-day/3-night excursion to Isabela Island allows students to investigate volcanic landscapes, productivity gradients, mangrove systems, and large-scale ecological processes influencing marine and terrestrial communities. The program emphasizes experiential learning, ethical field practices, and conservation applications in one of the world’s most iconic protected ecosystems. Ìý Ìý
