Overview
The Writing Across the Curriculum program offers a Faculty Training Seminar to foster innovation and instructional improvement for faculty teaching writing-intensive courses.
Florida Atlantic鈥檚 Faculty Senate established in the Spring 2007 semester the requirement for 听all faculty, including adjuncts and full-time faculty, who teach WAC-designated classes to complete the WAC program鈥檚 training. While faculty may teach a WAC course for one term prior to completing the seminar, ongoing teaching of these courses requires participation in WAC training beforehand. Consequently, faculty teaching without training must finish the seminar to remain eligible for future WAC teaching assignments.
Description
The Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) Faculty Training Seminar is a professional development experience facilitated virtually over eight weeks. Structured into six comprehensive modules, the course provides faculty teaching writing-intensive courses with informative presentations, curated pedagogical resources, and hands-on assignments with individualized feedback to help enhance their WAC courses. These components are designed to keep instructors informed about core WAC program requirements while equipping them with evidence-based strategies to teach, guide, and evaluate student writing effectively across diverse disciplines.
The seminar progresses across the following topics and activities:
- Week 1: Introductions
- Week 2: Envisioning Your WAC Course
- Week 3: Writing as Problem-Solving & Learning Process
- Week 4: Elements of Assignment Design
- Week 5: Revising Revision: Feedback as an Interactive Writing Process
- Week 6: Grading and Assessment
- Week 7-8: Putting Everything Together
Seminar Objectives
Upon successful completion of the seminar, participants will be able to:
- Create or revise course objectives to promote student learning
- Generate discipline-specific questions to foster logical and mindful inquiry
- Create an assignment prompt for a problem-based, scaffolded writing assignment that includes a low-stakes writing exercise, feedback-centered assignment, revision-centered assignment, and assessment tool with accurate, fair, clear, and agreeable criteria.
Eligible participants are tenure track and instructional faculty who teach or plan to teach a WAC-designated course within six months of participating in the seminar. Adjuncts and graduate teaching assistants are welcome when space allows. Each training course can accommodate up to eight participants.听
Compensation
Faculty need to successfully complete the seminar to be certified to teach WAC courses and to earn a $500 stipend.
