Surf Zone Transfer System

Overview

Loading and unloading cargo in areas without a fixed seaport faces challenges such as breaking waves in the surf zone, variable beach topographies and sea bottoms, changing weather conditions, and possible unstable terrains. This project presents a self-portable crane that drives to the pickup and drop off locations which is capable of maneuvering on different types of terrains while maintaining stability. The rounded mast of the crane provides a hydrodynamic profile which reduces the forces exerted by the ocean waves. Furthermore, a design that engages the hooking elements together allows the loading to be performed in an autonomous way.

Community Benefit

Transferring cargo in the surf zone is a constant necessity for various actors when a fixed seaport is unavailable for the reception of goods and humanitarian aid, military deployment, and scientific research. This project could become completely autonomous facilitating this task, decreasing the risk workers face operating close to this type of machinery.
