I work diligently for the day when the accomplishments of Latinos and other linguistic groups in the United States are so vast and quotidian that celebrating them would almost seem redundant and unnecessary. The good that is intrinsic part of the ordinary fabric of a society is not often celebrated boisterously, it is simply enjoyed, cherished, and built upon for the benefit of all future generations

His research examines how economic, cultural, and linguistic factors shape the academic literacy development of culturally and linguistically diverse students in the United States, with particular attention to Latin Emergent to Advanced Bilingual (EAB) learners.

Dr. Ram铆rez is the developer of Genre Translanguaging, a multilingual instructional framework that integrates Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), genre-based pedagogy, and translanguaging. His work investigates how explicit language instruction, classroom discourse, and well-designed curricular structures can reduce frustration and open pathways for meaningful learning among multilingual students. He also studies how U.S. educational policies and pedagogical models are recontextualized in Latin American contexts, extending the relevance of his work to international educational communities.

His scholarship combines poststructural materialism, critical discourse studies, Legitimation Code Theory (LCT), and critical pedagogy to illuminate how language and power interact in classrooms. He conducts linguistic analyses of educational texts, studies classroom interaction, and collaborates with teachers to design research-based practices that foster academic language growth and literacy success for multilingual learners.

Dr. Ram铆rez teaches courses in TESOL education, curriculum theory, systemic functional linguistics, bilingual education, and critical discourse analysis. He brings extensive experience in ESL and teacher education from both his native Colombia and the United States. He has shared his work with educators and researchers across the world, including Australia, Indonesia, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Argentina, China, Israel, Canada, and the United States.

Beyond his academic work, Dr. Ram铆rez enjoys playing and coaching soccer, making music, and learning alongside his two daughters in their bilingual and bicultural home environment.

Research

My research examines how language, culture, policy, and pedagogy shape multilingual learners鈥 access to powerful academic knowledge. I investigate how economic, cultural, and linguistic factors constrain鈥攁nd can also expand鈥攖he academic literacy development of culturally and linguistically diverse students in the United States. Guided by poststructural materialism, critical discourse studies, critical pedagogy, Legitimation Code Theory (LCT), and Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), my work seeks to make the relationship between language, knowledge, and equity visible for educators. I focus especially on designing explicit, coherent, and culturally sustaining approaches to literacy and language development for multilingual learners.

  1. A central strand of my scholarship involves the creation and study of听Genre Translanguaging听, a multilingual instructional framework grounded in SFL genre pedagogy and translanguaging theory. My research includes classroom-based studies, teacher learning, community literacy initiatives, and international collaborations in Colombia and Brazil. I aim to support teachers, teacher educators, school leaders, and policymakers in improving multilingual students鈥 academic achievement through well-designed language-and-content instruction. My work also examines how U.S. educational policies and pedagogical models influence or are recontextualized in Latin American contexts, extending its relevance to global audiences invested in equitable and linguistically responsive schooling.

Opportunities for Doctoral Students

I welcome doctoral students in the听Curriculum & Instruction Ph.D. program听and similar who are interested in researching multilingual education, Genre Translanguaging, SFL-鈥傗傗傗俰nformed genre pedagogy, classroom discourse, bilingual education, academic literacy development, or equity-oriented curriculum design. Students working with me will have opportunities to engage in classroom-based research, collaborate with international teacher networks, participate in multidisciplinary projects, and develop innovative approaches to improving multilingual learners鈥 access to powerful disciplinary knowledge. Prospective students who are passionate about language, literacy, equity, and meaningful pedagogical transformation are encouraged to reach out to discuss potential research directions and mentorship opportunities.

Genre Translanguaging

Developed by Dr. Andr茅s Ram铆rez

Genre Translanguaging听is a multilingual instructional framework developed to support students鈥 access to academic language and content through explicit, structured, and culturally sustaining teaching. The approach integrates听Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), genre-based pedagogy, and听translanguaging practices听to help multilingual learners read, write, speak, and learn disciplinary knowledge with clarity and confidence.

This framework has been implemented in K鈥12 schools, teacher education, university literacy courses, and community programs in the United States, Colombia, and Brazil. Teachers consistently report that Genre Translanguaging reduces frustration and increases engagement, comprehension, and joy in learning.

What Is Genre Translanguaging?

Genre Translanguaging combines the strengths of SFL genre pedagogy鈥攅xplicit teaching of how texts work鈥攚ith the flexibility and inclusivity of translanguaging. Instruction is organized around a sequenced learning cycle where students use their full linguistic repertoires to build comprehension, analyze texts, co-construct writing, and develop independent academic literacy skills.

Instructional Cycle

The framework uses a clear sequence to guide multilingual learners:

  • Preparing for Reading: Activating knowledge and supporting comprehension through multilingual resources.
  • Detailed Reading: Unpacking meaning, structure, and language patterns using explicit, scaffolded instruction.
  • Joint Construction: Co-authoring texts with teacher support, leveraging students鈥 linguistic and cultural knowledge.
  • Independent Construction: Producing texts with growing autonomy and genre control.
  • Reflection: Comparing language choices across students鈥 repertoires to strengthen metalinguistic awareness.

Rather than insisting on maintaining the use of one or another language during instruction, the full linguistic repertoire of students is utilized strategically and purposefully throughout these cycles.

Research Foundations

Genre Translanguaging is grounded in:

  • Systemic Functional Linguistics
  • Genre-based pedagogy and Reading to Learn
  • Translanguaging theory
  • Equity-oriented and decolonial perspectives on language education

Legitimation Code Theory (LCT) is recently being used to make visible the pedagogic practices in the classroom so teaching is intentional and effective.

My research examines how these approaches can be integrated to support multilingual literacy development, teacher learning, and equitable access to academic language.

Applications and Impact

Genre Translanguaging is or has been used in:

  • TESOL and bilingual education
  • Dual language programs
  • Undergraduate academic writing
  • Multilingual literacy projects in the USA, Colombia and Brazil
  • Community literacy and family education initiatives

The framework has demonstrated improvements in reading comprehension, writing development, vocabulary growth, and participation in classroom discourse.

Current Initiatives

  • Genre Translanguaging Network (GTN)
  • LLENA North America and LLEN Latin America
  • Teacher development partnerships in Colombia (Bogot谩, Santa Rosa de Osos, Agua Bonita 2)
  • Bilingual teacher preparation collaborations in Brazil
  • Forthcoming book projects on Genre Translanguaging and multilingual pedagogy

Collaboration and Contact

I welcome collaboration from teachers, researchers, and institutions interested in implementing听Genre Translanguaging听or adapting it to new linguistic and cultural contexts.

I am also eager to work with听doctoral students听who wish to research, develop, and expand Genre Translanguaging within the听Curriculum & Instruction Ph.D. program听at 糖心Vlog. Students interested in multilingual education, SFL, genre-based pedagogy, translanguaging, academic literacy, and equitable curriculum design are encouraged to connect with me about potential research directions and mentorship.
